| Abraham Massaley: Candidate For President -ULAA |
In every competition we always hear people say the best way to defend yourself is to always be on the offense and in politics, particular, we are told to never allow our opponent to be the first to define us to the public. In addition, one must be prepared to, as they say in the military, overwhelm his/her opponent at the very start of a campaign.
All of these came into play when Abraham Massaley declared his intentions to seek the presidency of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas, or ULAA. With rumors swirling and spreading like wild fire as to who all are running for the ULAA presidency, Abraham Massaley made his intentions official my unleashing series of ideas that he said will form the basis of his campaign, and if he becomes ULAA president, will serve as the vanguard of his administration.
Masseley, with out warning, or any hesitation, introduced himself as a candidate for the ULAA presidency by revealing what many ULAA watchers are describing as bold ideas whose time have come. Massaley, rather than leaving people wondering as to what he stands for, immediately unveils his vision in which he described what the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas will look like if he’s elected president. This move, did not only increase the seriousness of the Massaley campaign, it also up the ante in the ULAA 2008 presidential race. By bringing forth these ideas now, the Massaley camp has set the tune for the 2008 ULAA campaign by turning it into a ideas oriented race. Despite some hidden disadvantages in this move, Mr. Massaley did manage to some how make observers, or potential voters, to use his ideas as a benchmark to compare with what others may bring.
So who is Abraham Massaley? Mr. Massaley’s political activism is one whose resume can be traced from his tenure as student leader of the University of Liberia Students Union to his present role as the National President of the National Cape Association of America, or NACA. Mr. Massaley has been the leader of the organization guarding it from its infancy to its present stage. Many who know Mr. Massaley say he’s always ready to bring people together for various causes. When it came the time to bring focus on the plight of the University of Liberia, he was among those who launched the University of Liberia Alumni Associations in America, and also launched the first Liberian listserv in honor of the University of Liberia of which he’s the Moderator. His role as the moderator of the ULIBSAAForum points to one of his many qualities of bringing people together, this time through the electronic news medium.
One of his supporters called him Mr. Organization. A reference to what his supporters are describing as his great organizational skills. Skills that they are counting on for him to employ if he’s elected president of ULAA. Massaley, according to a staunched supporter, displayed those skills by the way he launched his campaign. You can tell that he’s ready to lead, according to this supporter. Those who are watching the ULAA 2008 campaign said the ideas Massaley expressed in his declaration of intent were so organized that they seem to suggest that his decision to seek the ULAA presidency was a long held thought. Those who embraced Massaley ideas are saying they mirrored many of the sentiments now being expressed by those who are anxiously seeking a dramatic change in ULAA. By embedding his vision with the on going sentiments, Massaley has established himself as a candidate for change, and candidate to reckon with.
In the mean time, one veteran of ULAA politics, while welcoming Massaley’s bold move, is saying that Mr. Massaley’s ideas could mean putting himself on the spot that may open him to lot of scrutiny during the campaign. “These ideas are realistic, and it will be difficult for Massaley to deviate from them”, the ULAA veteran added. Massaley, like any other candidate, should be ready to deal with any mistakes of the past. The 2008 ULAA election campaign is like no other. It will be long and will receive lots of scrutiny. A challenge that Massaley’s supporters say they welcome saying he has enough ideas to survive a lengthy election campaign.
